A Beauty Compass
~the right direction in all things beauty~
Hello Beauty Blog, it's been way too long! Things have been very busy and full of changes here at True North. I would like to introduce myself as the new blogger, Isabel! I am a recent graduate of the Aveda Institute Minneapolis in Esthiology (skin care) and began my new journey at True North two months ago. I will be taking over filling all of you in on the new products, easy tips and ways of incorporating wellness and beauty into your life to help you find your "True North". Don't worry, you will still hear from the other girls from time to time. You can look forward to our monthly blog and weekly posts that pertain to what's happening. I'm excited to be the new blogger and hear what you have to say!
Hey beauties!!! So last week we had a bit of technical difficulty getting our blog posted, so we will save that one for a rainy day. Today I just wanted to post a quick fact sheet about how awesome Aveda is and how happy we are to be a part of such a rock star company!! Hope you enjoy!!
Guys!!! This month has been so great! We have been learning a ton of ways to stay hydrated during these wintry months. But GUESS WHAT!!!!! People are hearing Pileated Woodpeckers, you know those stylish red-mowhawked, bad-asses that like to wake you up during your last 30 minutes in bed! Ok, so what does this have to do with anything other than having a feather color that is very hard to attain? Their beautiful drumming is a tell tale sign of SPRING!!! YES!!!! My personal favorite season! Anyways we will talk more spring in later, but today; a recap of what products we should be using until actual spring is here and even better; some Aveda ingredient info!
Product ingredients are so important this day and age. You are what you put on your skin, right? Well here at True North we are strong believers in this and that is why we carry only AVEDA! If you aren't familiar with Avedas long history keep reading, they are such a wonderful company and we cannot wait to share this with you! For more than 40 years (making them one of the first in this space) Aveda has been paving the way in innovative, naturally derived products! Naturally Derived: We define naturally derived ingredients to be those for which more than 50% of the molecule comes from a plant, non-petroleum mineral, water, or some other natural source. Lets be honest saying a product is "All Natural" means nothing, less than nothing really, anyone can say it!. Where did that product come from? Who made that product? What do the farmers who make the product use to fend off pests, heck...what was the farmers name? Aveda actually seeks out the farmers of our ingredients, they grow amazing relationships (pun intended!) with not only them, but the villages that they live in. Aveda practices sustainable sourcing (basically they develop relationships with villages where ingredients are grown and they give back by, for example, helping find clean water sources! How amazing right!) Another interesting thing about all of the Aveda products is that they are tested for 4 years before they are put on the shelf (and not on animals of course!) How amazing is that? Personally, knowing that the product has already been used for 4 years in addition to using the highest quality ingredients puts me at total ease!
Phew! Info overload I know but just think how happy your hair and skin will be that you put the time and effort into caring for it! So now that we know spring is on its way and Aveda is the best, lets watch this little slide show of all the products we talked about in January! Read along to find out the benefits of using them and the main ingredient that makes them special! Also thanks for reading and remember...Head North!!
Back to reality for this chika! A large group of friends and I just spent a nice long weekend ice fishing for lake trout on Gun Flint Lake! It was so much fun (in my other life I'm a total tomboy!) A much needed long weekend with no responsibility other than having fun! The downfall of having too much fun outside in this dry weather is dry skin! I know this ties into last weeks post but I cannot preach too much about the importance of hydrating!!!
Problem: Dry skin patches and cracks on my poor fingers and toes :(.
Solution: Manicure and Pedicure!!!
The best kind of problems to have are the ones that are so much fun to solve right!! Well we would love to have you in the shop to solve this for you. We use all Aveda scrubs, foot masques, oils and lotions to leave your hands and feet feeling soft as they would be if you didn't live in the north country! If you are like many people, you hold off on your mani/pedi until summer when you will A. see your cute polish color you stewed over choosing for an hour and B. when you decide to go on a vacation. The thing is, every time you shake someones hand, speak expressively with your hands or start limping because that crack in your heal is getting worse, you are making an impression on someone in your personal and professional world. Here is a just a small list of reasons why it is important to have these services done (keep this list handy for your when your husband asks, or just bring him too!)
1. Stress relieving
2. Good for circulation
3. Prevent and treat calluses and corns
4. Can help with swelling from sitting or standing all day
5. Trained professionals know how to properly trim nails to keep ingrown toenails at bay
The list can go on and on but lets just stop here and say its time to book your maintenance appointment. It should go on the list right next to oil change!
If you can't make it (I get it...business is on steroids right now) here are some at home maintenance ideas for when you have a free second at home!
1. Soak feet in a warm foot (or hand) bath, add some of Aveda's Stress Fix Soaking Salts to really take the edge off!
2. Use Aveda's Body Polish to remove any dead skin.
3. Finish with Aveda's Stress Fix Body Creme for the ultimate hydration (maybe ask your partner or kiddos to rub this in for a little circulation enhancing massage)!
Ok ladies (and gents, you do not have to get polish!) We can't wait to hear from you if you have any questions or comments! If you have a topic that you would like to hear about let us know and until next week...head north!!
Raise your hand if you are already feeling the effects of this arid weather? Well that's what we get for living in this barren, I mean beautiful north country!! Ok ok instead of complaining lets talk about what we can do to help get us through these wintery months with some resemblance of your beautiful summer skin and hair!
Switching up your routine is a no-brainer! It s pain in the tukas but it has to happen. Lets go through some easy add-ons to help you tame frizzy/dry tresses and help with flaky skin on face, hands and lips.
Winter is said to be the harshest season on your hair! That said its time to get a handle on your routine! The #1 BEST way to help keep your hair healthy is to STOP SHAMPOOING EVERYDAY...JUST STOP! Please. If you have ever been in to have a service with me you know, I preach this! I cannot tell you enough how much of a difference this has made personally. Not to mention it has cut my getting ready time in half! That alone should convince you, but if your not then let me list the other benefits of not shampooing everyday:
1. Helps hair retain natural oils that keep ends split-end free and less dry/frizzy
2. Cuts down on time spent on hair in the am
3. Day two hair is THE BEST!!
4. Cutting down on heat used on your hair=healthier hair!
5. Using less expensive Aveda products, which means they become more affordable!
6. Day 3 hair has so much volume!!
7. More time for drinking coffee in the morning!
Honestly the list can go on and on. Now if you have tried this and your hair was super oily the next day don't get frustrated!! That is why Aveda just came out with Dry Shampoo...its AMAZING guys...trust me!! Not convinced? Stop in and let me show you...just a small poof of this new product and you can go another day easy and it leaves your hair light, with extra volume and smelling like you just walked out of the salon.
Add a conditioning treatment once a week and your are set!!
Exfoliating more often and bumping up your moisturizer in the winter is a must. Adding exfoliating to your regime to slough off all that dead skin can add that perfect glow that you need this time of the year. With added exfoliating the moisturizer you use during those humid summer months just isn't going to cut it during these below zero days! We recommend Aveda's Rich (for extra dry/maturing skin) or Smooth (for normal/dry) skin.
We recommend watching Jessa's tutorial below on keeping your lips smooth and moist!!
Hands & Feet
Last but not least your hands and feet take a huge beating this time the year. That's why Aveda has a hand and foot relief! Weird right!!! They make it so easy! When you are exfoliating your face don't rinse it off your hands until you have exfoliated that nasty dead skin off of them too! Top it off with, well really any Aveda hand creme will do, chose your favorite aroma!!
Remember right before you hit the hay put on some lip saver and hand/foot creme, throw a little dry remedy in your hair and your set to wake up a moisturized glowing princess (not kidding!)
Do you have a favorite winter routine? Let us know, we love hearing what you guys are doing!! Stay warm ladies!
Hey guys! Ashley here and we are going to jump right into the thing everyone is talking about this time of the year...resolution! I know, I know can I be anymore cliche? Probably! One of my resolutions is for the salon and is to start posting blogs once a week. Now that is wayyyy to much to ask of my lovely, mother of 4, not sure how she ever even has time to use the ladies room, let-a-lone write a blog each week Anna!! She will be guest starring when she comes up for hair, I mean air! We will also be having a few other new bloggers helping out. So until then I will be doing my best to get you informative, entertaining content that I hope you will enjoy. Please feel free to comment if there is a specific topic you would like to hear about! We love hearing from you and enjoy the participation. Until next week beauties, head north
Dear Mom ~
If you are a mom and reading this - I feel for you and am right there with you! This blog is intended for You today - hopefully, to make your life, with kids, a little easier. I have four kids of my own and some days...ok, All can be challenging! Mornings, especially, can be hard - even if you don't have to go anywhere getting your kids off to where ever they are going, while trying to look decent, are very hard. I put together an essential list to help your day go a little smoother, so you don't have to wear sun glasses in the sixty below pitch black of winter (guilty!):
#1.) Start off with a clean slate for your face. I love the Aveda Brightening cleanser - it transforms dull/tired skin to give you a Much needed glow!
#2.) After cleansing while skin is still damp, use about half a pea size of the Aveda Energizing Eye Creme. Place it on ring fingers and gently blot out those purple tired circles - with my consistent two-three hour sleeps a night, sometimes a girl's gotta fake it!
#3.) Set everything with the Pure Botanicals Firming/Toning Mist. This feels like a refreshing cool drink of water for your skin and if you're running on empty your skin will definitely thank you.
*If you have time, the kids are cooperating and you feel really ambitious - put on the Aveda Tint. A moisturizer and foundation in one, beautiful and dewy - not heavy at all! Make those lovely lashes come out of hiding with our Mosscara infused with rose oil and the school will think the nanny/babysitter is dropping your kids off.*
#4.) Who has time for a shower? Not I most days. When that happens, lucky us, Aveda is coming out with Shampure Dry Shampoo THIS October!!!! It sucks up all the oil in your hair and makes it smell like organic angel wings - No lie. Wrap your hair up in a bun or messy bun because you GO...all the way out the door.
#5.) Hold UP! Before you go, dab on some of the Aveda blue oil. It helps with migraines, sore muscles (if you had to sleep in a crib or contorted in a corner) and can wake you up with it's peppermint scent - aroma is also great for masking those showerless days. It now comes in a roller ball, so you can fit it in your purse or diaper bag or gun holster.
I hope this list has helped somewhat! Don't forget our products will be 40% off come November 6th for our annual 'Kiss (Kick?) Your Hunter Goodbye' Sale - so Stop on In!!
THANK YOU MOMS FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO! Remember: We are all a hot mess, some are just better at faking it than others. Truth!
